Ship AI features people actually use: a product playbook
Teams do not need more AI ideas. They need a reliable way to turn one idea into something that ships and sticks. Here is the sequence I use, refined across products in production.
1. Write the moment, not the feature
Before any model, describe the exact moment a person hits the problem: what they are doing, what they want, what slows them down. If you cannot write that moment in three sentences, you are not ready to build. This is the cheapest step and the one most often skipped.
2. Fake it before you build it
Prototype the experience with the simplest thing that could work, even a prompt and a spreadsheet. Put it in front of five real users. You are testing one thing: does this actually change their moment? Most ideas die here, cheaply, which is exactly the point.
3. Ship the thinnest useful slice
Resist the platform. Ship the one workflow that delivers value end to end, and nothing else. A narrow feature that works beats a broad one that almost works. You can always widen; you rarely recover trust lost to a shaky launch.
Scope is the feature. What you leave out is what makes the rest usable.
4. Instrument adoption from day one
Decide, before launch, what usage means and how you will see it. Not vanity clicks, but the real signal: did the task get done faster, did people come back, did they stop working around it? Without this you are flying blind and will optimise the wrong thing.
5. Close the loop with the people who use it
The best roadmap is a short list of frustrations from real users, ranked. Talk to them every week. AI products drift; the model changes, the data changes, expectations change. The teams that win are the ones that keep listening after launch, not before.
The shortcut is discipline
None of this is exotic. It is product discipline applied to a technology that tempts everyone to skip it. Do the boring steps in order and you will ship AI features people keep using, which is the only kind worth building.
